Let’s talk about youth sports…
Or, more specifically, let’s talk about bad sports parents at youth sports games. Shouting instructions to their children, yelling at officials and coaches from the sidelines, confronting officials and other parents in the parking lot, are just a few of the behaviors we see and hear about. If you’re a parent with a child involved in youth sports you’ve probably seen some form of this behavior first hand and you know it puts you, as a parent, in a difficult place. You feel compelled to address it but then you risk getting caught up in it. After witnessing such a display, you leave feeling unsettled and perhaps questioning yourself about the benefits of your child being involved at all but removing your child deprives them (and you) of a positive youth sport experience.
Complicating the situation is that oftentimes these out of control parents, are the ones who may be the coaches and actual or perceived preferential treatment being shown along with a “win at all cost” mentality is simply antithetical to the purpose of youth sports.
